VPN based VOIP Blocked in UAE by Etisalat
Unlike many parts of the world where VoIP is seen as a very welcome
alternative to communication especially when it comes to cheap
international calls, this service has constantly been under attack in
UAE. It has been reported that most of the VoIP Providers have been
blocked by UAE Local Telecom and ISP companies. This implies that
people who lived in UAE cities like Dubai,Abu Dhabi, Sharjah etc can
not use VOIP phone calls now because VoIP is still illegal ,so they
can not make use of VoIP to make cheap phone calls .
Some have managed to route connections through VPN away from the 5060
SIP default port which easy to block . VPN is a virtual private
network which can be hosted off a server outside of UAE and can be
used over HTTP port 80 which can’t be blocked by your ISP.
However, there are strong indications that Etisalat is seeking to
apply a VPN Filter to track all VPN based traffic originating from
UAE. If this is true then there is every possibility that Etisalt
would target users in UAE using VPN extensively.
Come to think of it, blocking all VoIP access is really not a good
option to start with, why not think of a better way of doing it and
perhaps seize the opportunity and launch a parallel service.
